BME Play Development Network
Playworks launched the BME Play Development Network in 2009 to tackle the inequalities that exist for Black and Minority Ethnic communities within play and play work.
Since then, we’ve worked in partnership with the network to increase and develop play provision for children and young people from BME communities (including refugees and asylum seekers).
For instance, together we’ve provided play sessions in communities that didn’t have access to mainstream play provision; we’ve helped to set up community groups and projects providing play activities, including one which supports children affected by issues relating to seeking refuge and asylum; and we’ve provided training to parents, volunteers and professionals working with children, including workshops on diverse play and culture, race and identity.
The Network also brings play providers from BME communities together, so they can share experiences and best practice and have a stronger, collective voice.
