Environmental Play Day Re-make, Re-create, Re-claim
Building on the success of the Rally 4 Play events, which took place in Radford and on University Park, Playworks intends to hold yet another event in 2010. The first Rally 4 Play’s happened in February and June of 2008 with the aim of increasing community involvement and volunteering and advocating for children’s play in Nottingham. It also endorsed the need for greater access to appropriate, freely chosen and self directed play opportunities. It was done through free workshops running up to the event, which included banner making, mask and costume making, scrap build sculpture and much more. All this hard work culminated in a march by all the children and adults involved to the two sites, where they took part in a vibrant and engaging day of play and creative activities. The event was extremely well received with over 350 children and families attending.
This new event, planned for the 19th February, will hopefully be an extension of this success. The event shall take place at Playworks, the surrounding street area and Heskey Park.
The aims we would like to achieve through this event are initiating community partnerships by including the surrounding community in the development and delivery of the day. By surrounding community we mean everyone! From schools to community and play groups, community centres to local businesses and interested individuals. We would like to engage the widest number of children and their families and help them realise the importance of play and what is available in their area, while just having a fun day.
Children’s groups and play providers will be consulted throughout the whole process, through schools, after school clubs and community centres. Local play group organisers and other interested groups/individuals shall also be consulted and invited to attend or participate. We hope this will create a sense of ownership while delivering what people want to see in the run up to and during the event.
Activities on the day will include workshops, music, dance, food and much more.
