Nottingham Play Forum is an independent organisation owned collectively by its full membership that operates under the name of Playworks and has been working for childrens play in Nottingham since 1979. We registered as a limited company in 1986 and as a charity in 1987.

Full membership is open to local voluntary groups, families, schools, students and private organisations. Full members in the voluntary sector have voting rights at general meetings and they elect the board of trustees who manage the organisation on their behalf at the annual general meeting.

The trustees hold full legal, financial and policy responsibility for the charity and its activities, and meet on a monthly basis with the project director of the organisation, as well as actively seeking the views of the membership. Trustees are provided with training and support to fulfil their roles, but are also able to seek professional guidance from partners and associates as necessary to further the work and effectiveness of the charity.

Our aim is to improve the quality and quantity of play provision for children and young people in the Nottingham area, by providing relevant training, education, resources, support, advice and information to individuals, groups and organisations. Through our core activities we seek to promote the rights of children and young people to have opportunities for free play in their own environment.

  • Our Play Development and Information Service supports the strategic development of children’s play opportunities and play work expertise in Nottingham; providing advice and information on a variety of play related topics, through a play library, publications and a regular newsletter. The service is used by play and children’s services sectors, and interested members of the public, including families.
  • Extensive Scrap Store containing a wide range of reclaimed and fascinating materials donated by local businesses for community use; ideally suited for re-use in children’s creative and imaginative play activities. Also our Arts and Crafts shop makes convenient, low cost materials available to users and members;
  • A playwork training service providing practical arts, craft and play based activity sessions, as well as delivering certificated training for volunteers and paid playworks in all aspects of playwork.
  • We host regular Play Events and conferences, and also act as a local forum and host the Nottingham Play Partnership and Play Action Network meetings.
  • We deliver Street Play provision in targeted communities throughout the city.
  • We offer opportunities for voluntary work in play and the chance to become involved in Nottingham Play projects.
  • We also run an outstanding onsite crèche, which supports Playworks services and training
